Workshop: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods, April 28th and May 12th

We are happy to have Derek Beach (Professor at University of Aarhus), Peter Schmidt (Prof. em. at University of Giessen), and Karl-Dieter Opp (Prof. em. at University of Leipzig) as our guests for the next workshop organized by our PhD students Melis Baydag and Daniel Gloris.

The first part of the workshop intends to provide participants with an understanding of process tracing methods through an introductory lecture by Derek Beach, Professor of Political Science at Aarhus University in Denmark. The primary goal is to discuss the basics of case-based methodological approaches, the relative strength of process tracing, and how to differentiate it from other methods, such as large-n quantitative methods. This short workshop therefore aims to introduce the concepts and best practice of process tracing.
In the second part, Prof. Dr. Karl-Dieter Opp and Prof. Dr. Peter Schmidt will introduce and apply a theory driven quantitative social research program on protestors in East and West Germany. Their presentation will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of this method. They will use representative data from Allbus 2018 (Allgemeine Bevölkerungsumfrage der Sozialwissenschaften).
